Is Humor A Good Thing For Your Brand?

Summerland is a small town within Santa Barbara County, between Carpinteria and Montecito.  Two of our favorite local restaurants are there: The Summerland Beach Cafe (great for breakfast-best waffles) and The Nugget. The Nugget (pictured above) is a crazy, eccentric place that feels like it could be a saloon from California Gold Rush days.

While enjoying lunch at the Nugget this week, we noticed these guys at the bar. One was wearing a tee shirt with a graphic for "Stinky's" House of Fish on the back. It reminded us that humor, when it is done right  (and is part of your brand personality) can really resonate with your target market because it leaves an indelible impression that is hard to forget, even after hearing the brand name just once.

Then,  if you buy-in to the name you cannot help but laugh at the slogan, "Quality You Can Smell" and the descriptor, "Previously Fresh" A good slogan and descriptor should reinforce the brand name and make it even harder to forget.

Geico and Progressive Insurance have come out with omnipresent humorous commercials. They must be successful because other insurance companies, like State Farm have followed suit with their ridiculous commercials.  Monkey see. Monkey do!

What do you think of Stinky's?  Do you think these insurance commercials stink? Is humor good a good thing for your brand?

Hi Alexandra,

I absolutley love humor when done right.  You won't forget that name or the slogan.  My husband uses the DVR to record everything just to avoid the commercials.  But, the funny commercials, he will stop and go back to see them.  Who doesn't like to laugh?  My husband worked for UPS, and he would get upset when he saw the FedEx commercials because they were funny and grabbed your attention. "When you absolutely have to have it there!"... Great post.

Humor is great when done right, and if you remember the company because of it, it can be a great strategy! I'll bet the guy at the bar gets into a lot of conversations because of his t-shirt!

Ron & A, Great example. I like the humor of the fish house. I think humor in branding can be good if done right. It also has to match your personality somewhat. I have see humor done wrong and while some may like others may be put off by it. Great post!

I totally agree, Anna. Humor can definitely work in business, but you have to go about it the right way. No one wants ridiculousness, but funny is different - especially when it ties into the business in some unique or meaningful way. Thanks for the interesting post!

The setting is awesome and the shirt I'm sure creates lots of conversation and is memorable! I also think you need to go to Stinky's and give us a review! Does it live up to the hype?

Two of my favorite places on the East side of Seattle were:  "Sit-n-Bull" for our usual Friday hang-out after happy hours, and another place was a local bakery store with a big sign that said, "Stop and Get Your Buns in Here!"

Thank you for the giggles!😅

Yes, I appreciate humor. But some of the monkey-do insurance commercials are just dumb instead of funny.

That slogan is perfect for what that cafe represents - honesty and a relaxed atmosphere.  Love it!   As for Geico and Progressive, they are of course unforgettable thanks to their branding!

Hi Dorie Dillard Austin TX  Funny, I tried to Google the restaurant and only found https://stinkysfishcamp.com???  Perhaps they closed and the shirt is an antique?
