Ask An Ambassador: Commodity or Premium?

You might think salt is salt and pepper is pepper.  Just a commodity to grab off of your local grocer's shelf, and what you pick up might suit your palate.

But what if you could do better?

What if you discovered the advantages of NOT using a commodity offering?

There's a lot of variety out there even with the so-called basics. 

Rock salt, table salt, kosher salt, sea salt of many varieties and colors, Fleur de Sel, Himalayan, and the list could go on.

Start checking into black pepper and you'll find differences between Lampong, Tellicherry and Malabar. 

A little extra oomph to your meal that goes well beyond the paper packets of salt & pepper at the diner.

So how does the public see you?

Are you a commodity?

Your blog is an opportunity to show that you can add some spice to your real estate service offerings.

You can present generic information, or you can provide specifics that provide more detail about what you know and how it can help consumers have a successful home purchase or sale.

With thousands of agents available in most primary markets, it's critical to be found and prove that we're not the real estate equivalents of cheap paper packets of salt and pepper.

Posts about local real estate niches specific to home types, new construction, specific subdivisions, etc., those are the flavors that move an agent from a commodity to an agent who provides a reason to be called.

So how do you want your blog to be?  Commodity?  Or premium spice?

Wayne, We've found doing detail work (niches, subdivisions, etc.) is what gets us found.  If you don't have a big sphere/established referral business, finding other ways to get found is crucial.

We have a big bag of that, along with a selection of different peppercorns.  Amazing what you can order off the Internet, and in general proportionally way more affordable in larger quantities than the small bottle stuff at the grocer.

This is a terrific analogy, as others have recognized. Keeping top of mind with past clients, and prospects is key, as is providing the content that your targeted audience is looking for all, with a bit of spice here and there to keep them interested.

this morning I got an email from a current seller saying "the listing looks great on line, the pictures are perfect"  The house went pending before I got those photos.  But still .... will it close..... so it's out there saying "sellers still willing to show and take backups".  Because that's how I roll.  Backups are important.

And listings are advertisements for other sellers, so even in this market it pays to give a listing full treatment.  Our most recent listing went to a backup offer when the first buyer wanted repairs.

Hi Bill,

Boy did you nail it! What a great analogy. I just came back from Italy and they use sea salt which adds so much flavor. That extra oomph turns their meals into "spectacular" instead of ordinary! As agents we have to make sure we are not just "run of the mill" to our clients..show our value every step of the way!
